Day One: Arrival & Set-Up

Kick off your weekend getaway with a drive to Hayward, WI, and camp under the stars or cozy up in a cabin at the Hayward KOA Holiday which offers the perfect basecamp.

Morning

Hit the road so you can arrive at the Hayward KOA Holiday by mid-afternoon, around 3:00 PM. This campground is a great choice for bike fest weekends and outdoor getaways, especially because they’re often able to accommodate last-minute upgrades from tent sites to KOA Camping Cabins, perfect if rain rolls into the forecast. These rustic cabins offer electricity, giving you a dry, comfortable spot to cook, charge your gear, and settle in no matter what the weather brings.

Afternoon

After checking in at the Hayward KOA Holiday, take some time to unpack your gear and settle into your weekend basecamp. Whether you’re tent camping, staying in a rustic cabin, or at a camper site, this lively campground has everything you need, including a well-stocked onsite store for any forgotten essentials and a friendly, accommodating staff. It’s a great spot for families, groups of friends, or couples looking for a fun and relaxing outdoor getaway in Wisconsin.

Evening

For dinner, cook up hibachi chicken on your two-burner Blackstone stove, a favorite go-to recipe when we’re camping. Prep the veggies and rice from home to make dinner easy, flavorful, and fast. After dinner, take a walk around the KOA grounds to stretch your legs before winding down for the night. There is plenty of time to enjoy s’mores by the fire or card-games.

Day Two: Mountain Bike Race Day/Outdoor Activity of Choice & Downtown Exploring

If you’re in Hayward for Epic Bike Fest, Saturday kicks off with the first day of racing, typically the singletrack MTB course, making it an action-packed day for participants. For spectators, it’s the perfect time to explore Hayward’s charming downtown, sip coffee at a local café, and soak up the race-day energy.

Morning

Hopefully you made plenty of hibachi chicken last night, because this morning it makes for a delicious, protein-packed breakfast when paired with extra rice and a few eggs on top. If you’re in Hayward, WI for Epic Bike Fest, today is all about the singletrack race, which takes riders through the area’s legendary CAMBA trails. Not here for the race, no problem, Saturday morning is a great opportunity to explore Hayward’s scenic hiking routes or hit the area’s popular ATV trails for your own outdoor adventure.

Afternoon

If you’re spectating a participant at Epic Bike Fest, I recommend checking out Backroads Coffee, where you can grab a latte and indulge in the best gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. It’s a cozy spot to relax while the race is underway. After the ride, or after enjoying your own outdoor adventures, refuel with a quick lunch of sandwiches and chips packed from home. Then head into downtown Hayward to explore Main Street. It’s the perfect place to browse local shops and charming boutiques, and don’t miss a stop at West’s Hayward Dairy for their homemade ice cream!

Evening

Before you decide to leave downtown, don’t forget to stop by 3 Fly Sisters Taps & Wines, a cozy wine bar with outdoor seating. I joked about wanting a sangria to-go, and one of the owners overheard me and said, “We can do that!”—so I enjoyed a cold sangria as we wandered back to the car. Another reason to love Wisconsin! When camping, cooking onsite makes everything taste better. Tonight enjoy Egg Roll in a Bowl, another one of our go-to camping recipes. It’s quick, filling, and doesn’t require a fire—perfect for fueling up after a long day on the trails.
