Door County is the best kept secret in the Midwest for a region that can accommodate any one. From fine dinning to dive bars, to nature hikes to winery tours, and arts and crafts to fishing and boat tours. The hard part, if you don’t do your research ahead of time, you will drive right by the best place suited for your travels! Here is the best Door County itinerary to get you started in the right direction.

Door County Itinerary Overview
I love a mix of experiences when I travel, so this itinerary includes a little bit of everything—feel free to pick and choose what suits you best!
➡️Day 1: Stone Throws Winery, Red Putter, Roots Inn & Kitchen, Pearl Wine Bar and Bad Moravian
➡️Day 2: Kayak Tour, Roots Inn Lunch, Sunset Sail, and Waterfront
➡️Day 3: Door County Trolley and Dela Porta
➡️Day 4: Hiking, Twelve Eleven and Thyme
➡️Day 5: Last minute stops.
Day One: You have arrived!
Depending on where you are coming from, you will want to plan your arrival time around 11:30AM. Today is all about your initial arrival and getting settled and there is no better way to do that then by sipping on a glass of wine!
Morning
First stop: Stones Throw Winery! Start in the tasting room to find your favorite wine, then head to the restaurant to enjoy a glass. My top picks for food is the charcuterie board (antipasto) and Caesar salad—perfect pairings.

Afternoon + Evening
After your first glass of wine in Door County, it’s time for some fun—mini golf! You might drive right past it, but the local hidden gem is The Red Putter, known for its unique and challenging holes. Plus, it’s conveniently located near your next stop—checking into one of my favorite bed & breakfasts.
For those who prefer a full round of golf, Door County has several courses to choose from. Peninsula State Park Golf Course is my top recommendation for a scenic and enjoyable game.
After golf, head to Roots Inn + Kitchen located in Sister Bay to get checked in and unpack. Don’t spend too much time because you will want to head over to Pearl Wine Bar for some wine on the patio before heading to Bad Moravian for the best pizza. Be sure to check the schedule, as hours may vary, but this is a must-visit for dinner during your stay. If you’re gluten-free, call ahead to confirm availability for the night.

Day Two: On the Water!
Today is all about spending time on the water. Start with a morning kayak tour, enjoy a sunset sail, and wrap up the evening with dinner by the water.
Morning
Although you may not opt into staying at the bed and breakfast you will regret it if you are a foodie, or even if you are not. If you want to experience food like you have never had before, the breakfast at Roots Inn is unique and will provide a wide variety for your tastebuds during your stay. Get there early so you can get to your kayak tour shortly after! I recommend checking out Door County Kayak Tours or Cave Point Paddle & Pedal for your tour. This will show you the unique shoreline of Door County and give you a view up close most never experience of Cave Point County Park.
Afternoon
After working up an appetite, head back to Roots for lunch. If you are not as adventurous with your palate another great option is Sister Bay Bowl—a classic bowling alley with a great menu to satisfy any craving.

Timing your itinerary with the season is key! If sunset is earlier, you’ll be right on time for your sunset sail tour with Sail Door County, which conveniently departs from the Sister Bay docks. If sunset is later, take some time to explore Sister Bay’s charming shops—art galleries, ice cream spots, and unique gift shops—before setting sail.

Evening
Dinner will be at the Waterfront, again conveniently located in Sister Bay, offering a delicious meal with great cocktails and entrées. If sailing isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy an amazing sunset view right from the restaurant.
Day Three: Wine Trolly Tour
The perfect Door County itinerary isn’t complete without checking out a Wine Trolly Tour. If wine isn’t your thing, they offer a variety of options from beer, cocktails, haunted tours, sightseeing tours etc. I highly recommend Door County Trolley tours, I’ve done three of these tours, and they’re always well-organized! You’ll meet great people, gain local insights from your trolley driver, and have plenty of great photo opportunities along the way.
Morning + Afternoon
Enjoy breakfast before heading to Door County Trolley for a scenic and fun way to explore the area. I personally love the wine tours—they include lunch, a cheese stop, and let’s be honest, when in Wisconsin, cheese is a must!
Evening
For dinner, I highly recommend Della Porta. If you’re gluten-free, get ready for a treat—gluten-free calamari and risotto balls… AMEN! They also serve fantastic pizza and pasta.

If you’re looking for more after dinner, Sister Bay has plenty of spots for a drink or live music. Check out Al Johnson’s that is also famous for having goats on the roof in the mornings—a quirky and must-see Door County tradition!. Other good options nearby are Peach Barn, Twelve Eleven or Husby’s, especially on weekends, for a lively night out!

Day Four: Hiking
Door County offers incredible hiking, and today is all about exploring some of my favorite trails.
Morning
After breakfast, head to Peninsula State Park, a must-visit with endless scenic spots. Be sure to walk to the top of the observation tower for some of the best views in Door County. When you’re ready to move on, park near the exit—you’ll find a small entrance to Eagle Trail, one of my all-time favorite hikes. Keep in mind, the terrain can be rough, so plan accordingly if you have mobility concerns.

Afternoon + Evening
After a full day at Peninsula State Park, I like to head back to freshen up before dinner. Twelve Eleven and Thyme are both fantastic options near Sister Bay. You can typically catch the free trolley outside of Husby’s to take you there. Put your name in at Thyme, grab a glass of wine at Twelve Eleven, and you can typically enjoy live music while you wait for your time for dinner!
Day Five: What did you miss?
When visiting Door County, you’ll always hear about someone’s favorite hidden gem. I like to leave time on the last day for those extra stops before heading home.
Morning
I know I’ve kept you busy each morning, but if you haven’t yet, take a stroll down Sister Bay’s main road and catch the goats on Al Johnson’s roof—a classic Door County sight! If you’re bringing home a taste of your trip, pack a cooler and grab some goat cheese or other local cheeses along the way. Door County Creamery is one of my favorites and they have great soap! Door County also has some fantastic coffee roasters, and I always pick up a few bags from Ephraim Coffee Lab and Kick Ash to take home.
Afternoon
If you’re up for more adventure, Cave Point County Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park make for a great final hike before heading out. Or, if you’d rather explore a bit more, Sturgeon Bay has plenty of charming stops and great lunch spots to enjoy before leaving the peninsula.
Where To Stay
I’m a bit biased since I’ve only stayed in Sister Bay, but I truly think it’s one of the best locations in Door County. It offers easy access to many key spots, and there’s plenty to do within walking distance of your hotel.
📍My Favorite Place to Stay: Roots Inn & Kitchen I personally seek out good bed and breakfasts, and this one is a foodie’s dream! They accommodate almost all dietary restrictions while keeping meals unique and fun. Plus, the owner and staff are fantastic, they’ll share all the pro-tips to help you make the most of your Door County experience.

📍Hotel Option: The Dorr Hotel If hotels are more your style, The Dorr Hotel is always buzzing with energy. It also offers a great outdoor space for relaxing or enjoying activities with a great view of what is going on in Sister Bay.
📍Camping: Peninsula State Park If you enjoy camping, this is one of my favorite state parks in Wisconsin! They offer a few waterfront campsites, but be sure to book early, the prime spots go fast!
Best Ways to Get Around Door County
The best way to get around Door County is by car. Because the region is large and spread out, driving offers the most flexibility to explore its small towns, scenic parks, and hidden gems at your own pace. For a more relaxed experience, many areas, especially near state parks or in town centers are perfect for exploring by bicycle, with plenty of rental options available. You can also hop on a ferry to visit Washington Island, adding an additional adventure to your Door County itinerary.
FAQs
Here are answers to the most common questions travelers have when visiting Door County.
How many days are enough for Door County?
I’ve found that 4 to 5 days is the ideal amount of time for a well rounded Door County itinerary. If you’re planning to dedicate a full day to specific activities like a Trolley Tour or exploring Washington Island, I’d recommend leaning toward 5 days to ensure you have time for shorter experiences like shopping, hiking, or visiting local wineries. That said, you could easily spend a full week here if you’re looking for a peaceful, slow-paced getaway.
What is the best time to visit Door County?
The best time to visit Door County is between early June and early October. This window offers the warmest weather, local events, and access to all seasonal businesses. I’ve visited around Memorial Day, August, Labor Day, and October, and each trip had its benefits, but if you’re hoping to avoid the chill from Lake Michigan’s changing weather, plan your trip between Memorial Day and Labor Day. While Door County still has a lot to offer along with activities in late fall and winter, keep in mind that some restaurants, shops, and attractions close for the season.
Is Door County expensive to visit?
Door County can be as affordable or as extravagant as you’d like. The area offers a wide range of options for every budget, from free activities like hiking, beach days, and art galleries to fine dining experiences and shopping. Whether you’re looking to grab a casual bite or planning a high-end weekend getaway, you’ll find something that fits your style. Planning ahead allows you to tailor the experience to your budget and make the most of your visit.
Is Door County, WI good for outdoor activities?
Yes, Door County is an outdoor lover’s paradise. With over 300 miles of shoreline, five state parks, multiple county parks, and countless hiking and biking trails, it’s ideal for everything from kayaking and paddle boarding to golfing and scenic hikes. You can explore lakeside cliffs, charming waterfront towns, or hop on a guided kayak or bike tour. Whether you’re looking for a low-key walk through the shops or an active day on the trails, Door County has endless ways to enjoy the outdoors.
Door County Itinerary Final Thoughts
This is just the tip of the iceberg of what Door County has to offer! From salmon fishing tours to Washington Island day trips, beach days, and an incredible art scene—there’s so much to explore. My husband has participated in two 100-mile bike events, and there is even an International Dark Sky park.
